Biography
Sussman has over 50 years experience and has studied art in the NJ/PA/NY tri state area. Her art is a visual journal of her life thus far, expressing emotions of pain and chaos but also of redemption, hope, and endurance.
Her painting “I am not an Engineer” won the Onderdonk Purchase Prize in May 2020.
Paula Sussman
Paula demonstrated an aptitude for painting at a young age. After attending FIT in NYC for a marketing degree she spent a year in Italy studying art. She returned to the US to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. Paula has recently moved to Corrales, New Mexico to create her dream studio.
Artist's Statement
Why I Paint
As a deeply pragmatic person I have struggled with my relationship with art. But over the years it has developed into a means of escape and self expression. Now I paint as a way to air out my painful past, depict the beauty I see in the world around me, and to bring happiness into my life when I have trouble finding it on my own. I first became experienced in oil paintings, and it is my favorite medium, however most I largely work with acrylics out of convenince and safety. I also have experience in water colors and prints.
